Your Spring Pool Checklist: Getting Ready for Summer
September in South Africa means one thing for pool owners — it's time to get the pool ready. After a quieter winter, your pool needs some attention before the swimming season kicks off. Here's a simple checklist to get you sorted.
✅ 1. Check Your Water Level
Winter evaporation and rainfall can leave your water level too low or too high. Aim for the midpoint of your skimmer opening for optimal circulation.
✅ 2. Clean the Filter and Pump Basket
Clear out any debris that's built up over winter. A clean filter means better water circulation, which is essential for keeping your pool clear through summer.
✅ 3. Brush and Vacuum the Pool
Brush the walls and floor thoroughly, paying special attention to corners and shaded areas where algae likes to settle. Follow up with a vacuum to remove dislodged debris.
✅ 4. Check Your Equipment
Test your pump, filter, and any automatic cleaners before the season gets busy. A small repair now is far cheaper than an emergency call-out in December.
✅ 5. Test and Balance Your Water
Take a water sample to your local pool shop or use a home test kit. Before adding Activator-D, your water should be within these ranges:
- pH: 7.2 – 7.6
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm
- Free Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm
Balanced water is essential — it allows Activator-D to work effectively and protects your pool surfaces and equipment. If your pH is too high or too low, adjust it first before adding any treatments.
✅ 6. Start Your Monthly Activator-D Treatment
This is the most important step for algae prevention. Chlorine bleaches algae — Activator-D kills it. Adding Activator-D through your skimmer/weir at the start of spring sets up your pool's defences before algae season begins. One treatment a month is all it takes to keep green and black algae at bay through the South African summer.
✅ 7. Check Your Pool Cover
If you use a cover, inspect it for tears or damage before storing it away for the season. Clean it thoroughly before packing it away.
✅ 8. Inspect Pool Surrounds
Check coping, tiles, and paving around the pool for any cracks or loose sections that could become safety hazards during the busy summer months.
The Golden Rule: Prevention Over Cure
The biggest mistake pool owners make is waiting until there's a problem to act. A pool that's set up correctly in September — with balanced water and a monthly Activator-D treatment in place — will give you far fewer headaches through November, December, and January when demand is highest and conditions for algae growth are at their peak.
Get ahead of summer. Your pool will thank you.
